Seminal Vesicles

It is an accessory organ of the male reproductive system. Seminal vesicles are two lobulated gland, about 5 cm in length.
It produces thick alkaline secretion which contains substances essential for the nourishment of the spermatozoa and mixes with the sperms as they pass into the ejaculatory ducts and urethra. The secretion contains vitamin C, proteins, prostaglandins and high level of fructose. Seminal vesicle’s secretion forms 60% of the seminal fluid. The sympathetic nerve controls the contraction of the muscularis muscle coat and inturn secretion of the fluid.

Location and Description

  • The paired lobulated organs is located on the posterior surface of the urinary bladder.
  • The upper ends are widely separated and the lower ends are close together.
  • The narrow inferior ends join the ductus deferens(vas deferens) of same side to form the ejaculatory ducts which traverse the prostate gland and open into the prostatic urethra on the seminal colliculus on each side of the prostatic utricle.
