Penis

Penis is a male copulatory organ and common outlet for urine and semen unlike in females.
Penis has a fixed root and a body that hangs free

1.Root Of The Penis:
It is made up of 3 masses of erectile tissue, namely the two crura and one bulb

Follow up:

Bulb Of The Penis

  • Bulb is situated in the midline ( between the two crura) and attached to the undersurface of the urogenital diaphragm
  • The outer surface of the bulb is covered by the bulbospongiosus muscle
  • The bulb is continued forward into ventral part of the body of the penis as the corpus spongiosum

Crura Of The Penis

  • Each crura is attached to the sides of the pubic arch
  • The outer surface of the crura is covered by ischiocavernosus muscles
  • Right and Left crura converge anteriorly and lie side by side in the dorsal part of the body of the penis as the corpora cavernosa

2.Body Of The Penis:

It is the free portion of the penis. It is composed of 3 cylinders of erectile tissue enclosed outer skin and inner tubular sheath of fascia (Buck’s fascia). The two corpora cavernosa are present dorsally and single corpus spongiosum ventrally. During erection of the penis these masses become engorged with blood leading to considerable enlargement

  • Spongy or penile urethra traverses corpus spongiosum
  • Glans penis is the distal expansion of the corpus spongiosum that covers the distal ends of the corpora cavernosa
  • External urethral meatus is a slit like opening at the tip of the glans penis
  • Prepuce or foreskin is a hoodlike fold of skin that covers the glans to which it is connected just below the urethral orifice by the frenulum
  • Body of the penis is supported by 2 condensations of deep fascia that extend downward from the linea alba and symphysis pubis to be attached to the fascia of the penis, fundiform and suspensory ligaments of the penis

Blood Supply

Arteries
Branches from internal pudendal artery

  • deep arteries of the penis – supply the corpora cavernosa
  • artery of the bulb – supplies the corpus spongiosum
  • dorsal artery of the penis

Veins
Drains into the internal pudendal vein

Lymphatic Drainage

  • superficial inguinal nodes – skin of penis
  • internal iliac nodes – deeper structures of penis

Nerve Supply
– pudendal nerve and inferior hypogastric (pelvic) plexuses
