Bulbourethral Glands

Watch: Video on Bulbourethral glands

Other name:COWPER'S GLANDS
These are two small glands of male reproductive system located inferior to the sphincter urethrae muscle (part of urogenital diaphragm) within the deep perineal pouch. They are homologous to Bartholin's gland in females. The bulbourethral ducts open into the penile urethra (not to the membranous urethra). The secretion of the gland is poured into the urethra as a result of erotic stimulation. The secretion is thick clear mucus which is realized before ejaculation of the sperm. The bulbourethral secretion neutralizes traces of acidic urine in the urethra.

Clinical significance:The urine can come in contact with the bulbourethral gland in case of rupture of the membranous urethra.
